Excellence in Patient Safety Recognition Program

In an effort to support the continued improvement of quality and patient safety among Pennsylvania hospitals, HAP annually recognizes Pennsylvania’s top performing hospitals that have reduced health care-associated infections.

Excellence in Patient Safety Program Recognition

Now in its sixth year, HAP’s Excellence in Patient Safety Recognition program honors the commonwealth’s top-performing hospitals that have demonstrated low rates of health care-associated infections.

2024 Honorees

During October, HAP  announced the hospitals and health systems being recognized during 2024 for 2023 data. Honorees were announced during HAP's annual Patient Safety, Quality, and Equity Symposium in Harrisburg.

About the Excellence in Patient Safety Program

HAP has recognized hospitals across Pennsylvania for meeting these quality and safety goals through this recognition program. This includes:

  • 22 hospitals honored in 2024
  • 29 hospitals in 2023
  • 21 hospitals in 2022
  • 17 hospitals in 2021
  • 21 hospitals in 2020
  • 24 hospitals in 2019

HAP identifies top-performing hospitals using data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Healthcare Safety Network. To be recognized, hospitals must perform better than the mean standardized infection ratio in three key measures: central line-associated bloodstream infections, catheter-associated urinary tract infections, and Clostridioides difficile infections. The program is open to all hospitals across the commonwealth.

“Delivering high-quality and safe care to their communities is hospitals’ top priority. HAP is proud to recognize the Pennsylvania hospital teams that have achieved outstanding results from their commitment to continuous quality and safety improvement.”

HAP President and CEO Nicole Stallings

HAP members participating in HAP’s HQIC have already conferred HAP rights to the NHSN data so there is nothing that they need to do to be considered for the recognition. HAP member hospitals that do not participate in HAP’s HQIC, or have not previously conferred rights, can confer HAP rights to their NHSN data.
