Dear Leaders Ward and Costa:
On behalf of more than 235 members statewide, The Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP) continues to express our support for Senate Bill 225 to clarify and reform prior authorization practices in Pennsylvania.
As we have previously noted, prior authorization delays and denials have created significant challenges to all manner of health care services including routine medications, tests, and procedures. Senate Bill 225 makes important progress in reforming certain payor practices and helps remove administrative barriers that burden providers, delay medically necessary patient care, result in hospital underpayments, and increase health care costs for all patients, businesses, and government payors.
HAP has been an active participant of the provider coalition and has experienced first-hand the hard work of legislators and staff from both chambers to bring stakeholders to consensus on this complex and often-contentious issue. We appreciate their tenacity, skill, and commitment to Pennsylvania patients and commend them to you.
We respectfully ask you to assure swift concurrence with the House-passed version of Senate Bill 225 so that governor can sign this important measure before the end of the year.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me or (717) 561-5314.
Sincerely,
Andy Carter
President and Chief Executive Officer
The Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania
