Right from the Beginning – A Quality Improvement Initiative to Improve Compliance of Hepatitis B Vaccine at a Maternity Hospital
Community Champions - Medium Division
The Goal
The multidisciplinary team’s primary goal was to improve immunization rates and achieve a greater than 90 percent compliance of Hepatitis B vaccination among newborn infants over a 12-month period until August 2020, and monitor a sustenance phase until December 2021. The team also aimed to improve documentation of Hepatitis B vaccination in patient charts and minimize any adverse events associated with the administration of the Hepatitis B vaccine.
Intervention
The team identified several interventions that included:
- Compliance of the protocol to that of the Department of Health and the U.S. Centers for Disease and Prevention regarding perinatal Hepatitis B management
- Education of the staff members regarding the updated guideline/policy and the benefits of Hepatitis B vaccination in newborns.
Results
During the initial 12 months, the team was able to change the baseline compliance rate to a new baseline of 90 percent. The sustenance data continued until December 2021 and showed continued compliance with some isolated months during the pandemic showing lower rates of compliance, yet without significantly shifting the baseline. The data shows that when there is active conversation and education regarding the Hepatitis B vaccine, improvement in compliance can be achieved and maintained protecting newborn infants from Hepatitis B infection and its complications.
Due to the overwhelming success the first year, the health network agreed to expand the program across all ten hospitals during 2023.
