Case Study: Evangelical Community Hospital 2019 HAP Achievement Award

Awarded for: Community Hospital Drives Awareness of Human Trafficking—A Roadmap to Success
Optimal Operations
Medium Organizations
The goal: Educate staff and the community and deploy new processes and protocols to stem the tide of human trafficking along Route 15.
To build awareness of this issue, the hospital’s CEO, local crisis center prevention educator, and sexual assault nurse examiner:
- Trained 70 hospital leaders, using pre- and post-testing to inform subsequent training
- Trained an additional 1,300 (70%) hospital employees through e-learning and in-person sessions
To identify patients who might be victims and provide assistance, the hospital:
- Developed and educated staff about guidelines for assessing patients
- Instituted an on-call human trafficking point person to expedite victim assistance and connect to the regional crisis center
Results: The hospital successfully implemented an employee-wide training program with 100 percent compliance. Three cases of human trafficking have been identified, and the victims aided.
Moving forward, the hospital has been engaged to replicate this model on a larger scale with a quaternary medical center.
