The Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP) applauds the General Assembly’s bipartisan, final passage of legislation improving health care access and delivery through telehealth. Senate Bill 739, sponsored by Senator Elder Vogel (R-Beaver), now heads to Governor Shapiro’s desk for approval.
The legislation defines reimbursement requirements for telehealth services and ensures payment cannot be denied simply because care is provided via telehealth. Improving access to telehealth has been a longtime priority for HAP and the hospital community.
“Today’s passage of Senate Bill 739 is a long-sought win for Pennsylvania patients and health care providers,” HAP president and CEO Nicole Stallings said. “Telehealth helps meet patients where they are, increasing access to routine and preventative care to improve health outcomes. It also extends the reach of providers at a time when the commonwealth’s growing need for care is outpacing the professionals available to deliver it. HAP and Pennsylvania hospitals thank Senator Vogel for his persistent leadership over nearly a decade to enact this vital legislation, as well as leaders in both chambers and the governor for making it a priority.”
By ensuring that insurance covers telehealth and increasing access to primary and specialty care, particularly for at-risk populations, the bill will empower patients to manage chronic conditions and avoid hospital stays.
