What’s Next for AI Regulations in Health Care?

October 14, 2024

Artificial intelligence tools are transforming health care—for payors and providers alike.

Heading into 2025, state and federal policymakers are weighing how to regulate these emerging technologies.

  • The issue:  This month, the Pennsylvania Health Insurance Committee hosted a hearing about the use of AI in health care—with a focus on the potential use of new technologies in insurers' coverage decisions.
  • What it means for hospitals:  Lawmakers and regulatory officials at the state and federal level are considering how these AI tools (large language models, machine learning) should be incorporated into both everyday care and insurer coverage decisions. These discussions will only intensify as payors and providers look to implement these new technologies.
  • Quotable:  “Computers and technology add infinite value—but they can’t replace human empathy, expertise, judgment—and we believe that trust is of utmost importance as we leverage AI to provide cutting-edge care to our patients in our communities,” R. Hal Baker, MD, senior vice president and chief digital and chief information officer, WellSpan Health, said in testimony during the state hearing.

The hearing from the Pennsylvania Health Insurance Committee is available to watch online.
