What to Know about Obesity in the U.S.

September 26, 2024

Two new CDC reports show how the high prevalence of obesity continues to pose a public health threat across the U.S.

New CDC data indicate 23 states have adult obesity rates above 35 percent. Ten years prior, no state had an adult obesity prevalence at or above that threshold, the CDC reported.

"This new data highlight the need for obesity prevention and treatment options, which start with building healthier communities where people of all ages have safe places for physical activity, and where health care and healthy food options are accessible and affordable for all," said Karen Hacker, MD, MPH, director of CDC's National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion.

Here are five takeaways:

  • Overall trend:  From August 2021–August 2023, the prevalence of obesity in adults was 40.3 percent, with no significant differences between men and women.
    • Obesity prevalence was higher in adults ages 40–59 than other age groups.
  • Severe rates:  The prevalence of severe obesity in adults was 9.4 percent.
  • Long-term comparison:  The age-adjusted rates for obesity have not changed significantly compared to 2013–2014, but severe obesity prevalence has increased from 7.7 percent to 9.7 percent.
  • Of note:  It’s too early to tell if newly approved medications for obesity will play a significant role in addressing this public health challenge, officials note.
  • Quotable:  “There's a common misconception that obesity is a result of lack of willpower and individual failings to eat well and exercise," said Ruth Petersen, MD, director of CDC's Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity. "Many factors contribute to obesity like genes, certain medications, poor sleep, gut microbiome, stress, access to affordable food, safe places to be active, and access to health care. Understanding these factors helps us identify potential prevention and treatment strategies."
