National Donor Day: 5 Facts to Know
February 14, 2025
Today is not just Valentines Day—it’s also National Donor Day. The annual observance is dedicated to spreading awareness of organ, eye, and tissue donation and the opportunity to share the love by becoming a donor.
Hospitals throughout Pennsylvania are focused on promoting organ donation within their communities. Each year, HAP partners with the commonwealth’s two organ procurement organizations—the Center for Organ Recovery & Education and Gift of Life Donor Program—to support hospitals in increasing awareness through the HAP Donate Life Pennsylvania Hospital Challenge.
Here are five facts to know for National Donor Day.
- Power of donation: One organ donor can save up to eight lives and help up to 75 people.
- Donors needed: There are more than 100,000 people waiting for lifesaving transplants nationally, and another 4,000 are added to the wait list monthly.
- Easy step, big impact: It only takes 30 seconds to register to become a donor.
- Open to anyone: Anyone, regardless of age or medical history, can sign up to be a donor. People under 18 need a parent or guardian’s consent.
- It’s free: Organ donation comes at no cost to donors or their families.
