3 Ways to Celebrate Worldwide Pressure Injury Prevention Day

Annual observance is November 17

November 16, 2022

Hospitals and their dedicated staff are committed to providing outstanding patient care.

Tomorrow, HAP joins hospitals in Pennsylvania and around the world in observing Worldwide Pressure Injury Prevention Day. The annual observance is designed to increase awareness about pressure injury prevention and to educate health care providers, as well as the public, on this topic. The annual celebration is sponsored by the National Pressure Injury Advisory Panel (NPIAP).

The Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality (AHRQ) estimates that more than 2.5 million individuals in the U.S. develop pressure injuries annually, and medical management of pressure injuries costs the U.S. health care system $9.1 billion to $11.6 billion per annum. Even more significantly, 60,000 people die yearly from pressure injury complications.

Worldwide Pressure Injury Prevention Day:

  • Promotes worldwide awareness for pressure injury prevention
  • Creates interest in and education about pressure injury prevention
  • Reinforces the relationship between national and local organizations

NPIAP has developed an extensive media materials package appropriate for all health care settings and organizations. Materials for this year include posters, fact sheets, and press releases.

HAP has been working with Pennsylvania hospitals to decrease the incidence of hospital-acquired pressure injuries. Through the use of evidence-based protocols, targeted education, and the development of individual action plans for rapid improvement, hospitals have the advantage of this time-tested collaborative program.
