Building a Connection Between the Workforce Investment System and Health Care

This guidebook provides examples of how Pennsylvania's workforce investment system can work with health care providers, the education community, and others to raise awareness of health care opportunities and direct prospective health care workers into job training programs. The book also describes the federal Workforce Investment Act and its implementation in Pennsylvania.
Nursing Exploration Patch Program

Pennsylvania's Girl Scouts can now earn a "Nursing Exploration" patch! By completing a number activities, Junior, Cadette, and Senior Girl Scouts can increase their knowledge of the variety of career opportunities available in nursing and increase their awareness of the growing need for nurses. The 13 Girl Scout Councils across Pennsylvania have received all that they need to encourage their troop leaders to work with the girls to complete the patch activities. Hospitals and health systems can assist by contacting their local Girl Scout Council to volunteer to help Girl Scouts complete the patch requirements. This program is sponsored by HAP, Pennsylvania Department of Health, Pennsylvania State Nurses Association, and Pennsylvania Organization of Nurse Leaders. "Speaking to Youth About Careers in Health Care" Program

HAP has created a sample education program that members may use in speaking with youth in their communities about careers in health care. The model program begins with a group presentation by health care professionals from your organization. Afterwards the children are broken into three or four groups where they learn about what health care professionals really do. The program wraps up with another group presentation.
