This help section will guide you in using the HAP website
and its resources. It is divided into two major topic areas; each includes a more
detailed list of help areas under that topic to assist you.
Using the Site
Technical Assistance
To perform a basic search of the content contained within
the site, type keywords into the "Search For:" field located on the
" Search" page. To execute the search, either click "Search
Site" or the "Enter" key.
Multiple search terms
- Consecutive words are treated as a phrase; they must appear in the same order
with no intervening words. For example, entering Medical Liability Reform
will return documents containg the phrase Medical Liability Reform.
- Use AND to search for documents containing two or more search terms.
For example, entering tobacco and settlement will return any publication
that contains the word tobacco and the word settlement.
- Use OR to search for documents containing one term or another term.
For example, entering tobacco or settlement will return any document that
contains either the word tobacco or the word settlement, or both.
- Use AND NOT to exclude certain publications containing the specified
text from your search. For example, entering Pennsylvania and not State
will search for occurences of the word Pennsylvania, except when the word
State occurs anywhere in the document.
Wilcard
You may search for words with the same prefix. For example,
type hospi* to find documents containing hospital, hospitals,
hospice, and so on.
Quoted Phrases
Certain words must be part of a quoted phrase:
- If you want the keywords and, or, etc. to be taken literally,
then they must be part of a quoted phrase. For example, entering "health and
human services" (with the quotation marks) will search for the entire phrase
health and human services. But if you type the same query without the quotation
marks, then the word health and the words human services will be
searched.
- Special characters such as "$" and "#" must be part of a quoted phrase. For
example, enter "$200,200" (with the quotation marks) to find that monetary
value.
Case Sensitivity
The search engine is case-insensitive. For example, entering
disaster preparedness and Disaster Preparedness will return the
same results.
The advanced search is performed in the same manner as the
basic search described above: simply type keywords into the "Search For:"
field. However, with the advanced search, you may alos apply several constraints
to your search terms.
Search Constraints
Matching
This constraint allows you to specify either the "Exact Phrase," "All
Words," or "Any Words" for the term you are searching.
Content Type
This constraint allows you to search for specific types of content found on the
website. For example, PDF files and "News Articles."
If your keyword search produced no results, try using a
more general search term or use one of the search tips outlined above.
Search produces no results
If your keyword search produced no results, try using a
more general search term or use one of the search tips outlined above.
