DHHS Issues Report to Congress on Social Risk Factors' Impact on Medicare VBP

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) issued a report to Congress on the “Social Risk Factors and Performance under Medicare’s Value-Based Purchasing (VBP) Programs.” The report was required under the Improving Medicare Post-Acute Care Transformation (IMPACT) Act of 2014.

National ‘Scorecard’ Demonstrates Improved Safety in Hospitals; Opportunity for Continued Improvement Through HAP

The Agency for Health Research and Quality has recently released an update of its National Scorecard on Rates of Hospital-Acquired Conditions. The scorecard represents demonstrable progress over a five-year period to improve patient safety in hospitals. Preliminary estimates for 2015 show a 21 percent decline in hospital-acquired conditions since 2010.

New Data Available for Consumers About Care in Long-Term Care Hospitals and Inpatient Rehabilitation Facilities

Consumers now will have an opportunity to learn more about the quality of long-term care hospitals (LTCH) and inpatient rehabilitation facilities (IRF). The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has launched two consumer-facing websites that provide quality data on LTCHs and IRFs.

News Release:  A new report issued by the American Hospital Association (AHA) addresses ways in which hospitals can help ensure access to essential health care services in vulnerable rural and urban communities. 

Andy Carter, president and chief executive officer of HAP, serves on the 29-person health care leader task force that developed the report.The task force met with policymakers and hospital and community leaders during a 15-month period to identify essential health services, strategies to meet community needs, and barriers to those strategies.

WHO Releases New Guidelines to Prevent Surgical Site Infections and Superbugs

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), surgical site infections in the United States add more than 400,000 hospital days each year, and account for $900 million in avoidable health care-related costs. Working to reduce surgical site infections globally, WHO has released 29 recommendations aimed at preventing infections before and during surgery.

CMS Announces Early Success in its Comprehensive Primary Care Initiative

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced the results from its Comprehensive Primary Care (CPC) initiative. The CPC initiative is a multi-payer partnership with the goal of supporting primary care as the foundation of the health care system. The program provides care coordination payment to primary care clinicians to enable them to provide patients with access to comprehensive and coordinated care.
