HAP Holds Opioid Learning Action Network Webinar

May 29, 2019

HAP presented an informational overview of its newest care improvement initiative, the Opioid Learning Action Network (LAN). This initiative will support Pennsylvania hospitals in their efforts to address opioid use disorder (OUD) and reduce drug-related overdose deaths.

Pennsylvania coroners and medical examiners reported 5,456 drug-related overdose deaths during 2017—nearly 15 deaths each day. This public health emergency is impacting families, physicians, first responders, and hospital staff who are coping with the crisis.

HAP has secured funding from Bloomberg Philanthropies to deliver a no-cost program, specific to hospitals, for improving OUD care in Pennsylvania. HAP’s Opioid LAN will bring together clinicians from across the state for networking dialogue and to:

  • Create and improve pathways and protocols
  • Share experiences and lessons learned during statewide and regional in-person events, webinars, open office hour calls, and peer-to-peer discussions

Year-one goals include increasing:

  • Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) in the emergency department and warm handoffs to MAT in the community
  • Direct warm handoffs to community providers for MAT or abstinence-based treatment
  • Evidence-based OUD treatment and warm handoffs for pregnant women
  • The number of direct inpatient admissions for MAT initiation from the emergency department and MAT initiation for hospitalized patients with OUD

The in-person kick-off meeting will be held August 20, 2019, at the Sheraton Harrisburg Hershey Hotel.

Hospitals and health systems are encouraged to sign up for this free initiative.
