HAP Achievement Awards Spotlight: Jefferson Torresdale Hospital
December 18, 2018
Jefferson Torresdale Hospital was awarded HAP's “Living the Vision” 2018 Achievement Award for the Progressive Mobility Program to enhance outcomes for critically ill patients cared for in intensive care units (ICU). The program achieved sustained improvements in the quality of patients’ ICU stays.
Specifically, Jefferson Torresdale’s Progressive Mobility Program sought to shorten critical care patients’ length of stay in ICUs and reduce their risk of developing delirium and/or weakness.
In general, such programs apply evidence-based practices related to mobility in the critical care environment in order to reduce patients’ length of stay, time on ventilators, and ventilator-associated events. Jefferson Torresdale chose a five-level program that advanced patients from tilting in their beds through sitting, dangling their feet, and walking based on patients’ clinical conditions and response to activity.
To establish its program, Jefferson Torresdale created a multidisciplinary task force that:
- Developed an implementation plan
- Reviewed and purchased equipment
- Piloted the program in two ICUs
Jefferson Torresdale’s Progressive Mobility Program resulted in sustained decreases in:
- Ventilator-associated events (down 60%)
- Time patients are on ventilators (down nearly a day)
- Length of stay in the ICU (also down nearly a day)
As a result of these successes, the program has been implemented in all the organization’s ICUs.
Congratulations to Jefferson Torresdale for receiving the 2018 HAP “Living the Vision” Achievement Award. Learn more about the Progressive Mobility Program and other award-winning programs on HAP’s website.
