HAP Achievement Awards Spotlight: Titusville Area Hospital
November 05, 2018
Titusville Area Hospital received HAP’s 2018 “Excellence in Care” Achievement Award for implementing process changes that reduced its Emergency Department (ED) “door to doc” times by nearly one half, reduced the overall time patients spend in the ED, and increased patient satisfaction scores.
The hospital utilizes Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ quality measure scores to track its ED through put times. During 2016, it began to monitor and analyze through put for 100 percent of the patients that came through the ED. The results provided an opportunity to develop and implement process improvements that ended up bringing the hospital’s door to doc time below the national average and improved patient satisfaction in the ED.
Titusville formed an Emergency Department Performance Improvement committee and implemented the following initiatives across the emergency, imaging, and lab departments:
- New patient triage process
- Employee communication board in the ED
- Quarterly physician report cards
- Imaging process changes
- Laboratory process changes
- Patient satisfaction surveys
- Follow-up phone calls
The project led to a significant reduction in the door to doc time, bringing the time below the national average. In addition, 99 percent of the patients seen in the ED state they would recommend the ED and the overall satisfaction is at 97 percent.
