HAP Statement: Warm Hand-off Regional Summits
April 27, 2018
Statement from Michael J. Consuelos, M.D., HAP’s senior vice president, clinical integration, in response to the Pennsylvania Department of Health’s news conference following regional summits about opioid overdose warm hand-off programs:
“HAP applauds the Pennsylvania Department of Health’s work to host the warm hand-off regional summits. As a participant in those summits, we saw first-hand the value of convening local leaders and experts at every level of care to identify best practices and common ground.
“Strong state and community partnerships are foundational to our collective efforts to help overdose survivors through treatment and to prevent substance abuse in our communities.
“Substance use disorder is a chronic condition, like diabetes and hypertension. These conditions take a lifetime of patient commitment to recovery. We must advocate for provider coordination and increased funding for integrated behavioral health treatment services, so patients can continue to receive right care, in the right place, at the right time.
“HAP pledges to continue its work with Pennsylvania hospitals to identify meaningful avenues to promote prevention and appropriately support needed care provided in inpatient and outpatient treatment facilities.”
