Patient Safety Awareness Week is March 11–17, 2018
March 12, 2018
Pennsylvania health care providers and consumers have the opportunity to celebrate Patient Safety Awareness Week March 11–17, 2018. This annual event, organized by the National Patient Safety Foundation (which merged during 2017 with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement) is designed to create awareness about patient safety and to empower consumers to take an active role in their health care. The focus this year is on patient engagement and safety culture.
Throughout the week, the National Patient Safety Foundation is encouraging those taking part in the event to share their activities on social media and at the event website, where they can take a pledge for patient safety, get ideas for engaging staff and patients, download free resources, order branded materials, or honor a loved one touched by medical harm.
Helping hospitals to increase awareness about patient engagement and safety culture is a priority for HAP. The HAP Person and Family Engagement (PFE) Advisory Council is comprised of patients, family members, hospital caregivers, and community leaders, and serves to assist Pennsylvania hospitals in patient-centric care efforts. The HAP Hospital Improvement Innovation Network's (HIIN) PFE Leadership/Culture of Safety Council provides a platform for HIIN hospitals to network, problem solve, and work together to implement and maintain five unique metrics designed to engage the patient along the continuum of hospital care.
HAP HIIN is offering a conference on June 4, 2018, entitled: Person and Family Engagement: How Do We Get There From Here: Tackling the 5 CMS PFE Metrics. Applications are being solicited for hospital teams to serve as panelists at the conference to discuss success stories, strategies, and lessons learned regarding operationalizing select PFE topics. Hospitals are invited to share their organization’s experiences in advancing person and family engagement at this statewide event. Call for Panelists details are available online. Be sure and Save the Date, as more information will be forthcoming.
For additional information regarding becoming involved in HAP PFE work, or becoming a panelist at the conference, please contact HAP’s Janette Bisbee.
