HAP Achievement Awards Winner Spotlight: OSS Health

March 09, 2018

HAP Achievement Awards LogoIncredible work is being done across the state as Pennsylvania hospitals step up to improve health care and implement programs to tackle societal challenges, such as the opioid crisis. Its impact is undeniable. It is the number one cause of accidental death, and four times more people die from overdoses than from automobile accidents.

This week we’re sharing the award-winning program developed by OSS Health to standardize opioid prescription amounts and decrease the quantity and duration of opioid prescriptions.

Working with baseline prescribing and quality data from 2015, OSS Health worked to standardize their prescription amounts for common procedures—and to decrease overall prescriptions in quantity and duration.

Through this project, during 2016, OSS Health:

  • Decreased total prescriptions by 15 percent
  • Decreased total opioid tablet prescription by 33 percent—despite a significant uptick in patient volume
  • Achieved decreases with very few patient complaints

Achievement Award PhotoThe project excelled in its efforts to open up a dialogue with medical staff, stakeholders, and community members to understand the true depths of opioid use in the community, and to tailor education needs accordingly.

OSS Health took great care to be conscious of the individual needs of each patient encouraged an open dialogue with staff to make sure that the prescribing guidelines met the needs of both patients and physicians.

The commitment to education and dialogue helped physicians inform patients—from the very beginning of their treatment planning—that there would be an end point to their opioid prescriptions.

A key part of the education campaign was the Opioid Safety Handout that emphasized the importance of accurate medical history, outlined key opioid side effects, offered safe opioid disposal options, discussed pain management alternatives, and clarified the new prescribing guidelines. The companion poster display also reminded staff about their commitment to prescribing goals.
