HAP Achievement Awards Winner Spotlight: Cancer Treatment Centers of America at Eastern Regional Medical Center
January 25, 2018
Pennsylvania is home to some of the most cutting-edge hospitals in the country. This week we’re sharing two award-winning programs developed by Cancer Treatment Centers of America
at Eastern Regional Medical Center that improved patient care in the Oncology Intensive Care Unit and reduced hospital-acquired pneumonia.
The objective of the first program was to improve patient care in the Oncology Intensive Care Unit by meeting quality metrics, decreasing hospital-acquired infections, and increasing nursing engagement and professional practice. The intervention centered on the use of a lean daily management board, which allowed the team to focus on safety, quality, engagement, innovation, and finance. Metrics were placed with each category for discussion every day during every shift.
Within the first year, the team observed significant improvements, which continued throughout 2016. Among the significant improvements:
- Medication scanning increased
- Venous thromboembolism prophylaxis improved dramatically
- Hospital-acquired pressure ulcers decreased
- Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infections dropped to zero
- Nursing professional specialty certifications rose
- Educational events exceeded goal
The second project, team members identified a noted increase in the number of hospital-acquired pneumonia cases on the inpatient telemetry unit. They focused on implanting the Massey Bedside Swallowing Screen upon admission to the unit to detect deficits that could lead to hospital-acquired pneumonia. They also introduced strict oral care for high-risk patients.
Once again, introduction of a lean daily management system board engaged the team members to work together, problem-solve, and increase accountability.
Post-intervention from May 2015 to May 2016 indicated zero cases of hospital-acquired pneumonia on the unit, and the patient length of stay decreased. The admissions screening process was adopted by other units and hospital-acquired pneumonia rates have remained low.
Maintaining momentum for an extended period of time is one of the most difficult challenges in health care. The key is to ensure that quality and care improvement is imbedded in the culture. Congratulations to Cancer Treatment Centers of America
at Eastern Regional Medical Center for their work that led to earning two 2017 HAP Achievement Awards.
