Hospitals Continue Adding to the Pennsylvania Workforce
August 07, 2017
Unlike colleges and universities that laid off nearly 20 percent of their workforce during June, hospitals added 2,100 workers. Preliminary, not seasonally adjusted, Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry data show that direct hospital employment reached 277,500 during June 2017, an increase of more than 3 percent during the last year.
Pennsylvania’s June unemployment rate held steady at 5.0 percent. The commonwealth’s rate remained above that of the United States (4.4 percent), which was up one-tenth of a percentage point from May. Over the year, the Pennsylvania and national unemployment rates both declined by one-half of a percentage point.
HAP has updated monthly employment data (not seasonally adjusted) from December 2007, through June 2017, for select Pennsylvania industries, including hospitals.
