HAP Memo 16-02

February 1, 2016

TO:  Chief Executive Officers and Chief Medical Officers of HAP Member Hospitals and Health Systems
FROM:  Andy Carter, President and Chief Executive Officer
SUBJECT: 2016 Pennsylvania Donate Life Hospital Challenge

Issue and Recommended Action:  The Hospital & Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP) has partnered with the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the two organ procurement organizations serving Pennsylvania—the Center for Organ Recovery & Education and the Gift of Life Donor Program—to support the 2016 Pennsylvania Donate Life Hospital Challenge, which begins April 1, 2016, as part of National Donate Life Month. The Pennsylvania Donate Life Hospital Challenge encourages Pennsylvania hospitals to increase organ donation awareness and designations within their hospital and community.

Interested organizations are encouraged to register to participate in the challenge. Once registered, your 2016 hospital challenge liaison will receive additional information about suggested activities to inspire and increase donor awareness and designations within your hospital family.

Additional information about how best to engage your organization in the hospital challenge will be provided at an in-person kickoff meeting that HAP is convening on Monday, March 14, 2016, at the HAP headquarters in Harrisburg. Please register to attend the kickoff meeting by Monday, March 7, 2016.

Background:  More than 8,400 Pennsylvanians await organ transplants and thousands of others await tissue transplants. Nationally, more than 121,000 men, women, and children are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant. Twenty-one of them die each day because an appropriate match was not found in time. One organ, tissue, and eye donor may save up to eight lives and help more than 50 people.

HAP encourages your participation in the 2016 Pennsylvania Donate Life Hospital Challenge. Hospitals will be acknowledged for their efforts—the awareness and designation activities are captured on a scorecard for participating hospitals to achieve platinum, gold, silver, and bronze level recognitions. The 2016 challenge will be focused on health, advocacy, and passion. The challenge will run from April 1 to August 31, 2016.

For Additional Information:  Questions about the campaign should be directed to HAP’s Mary Marshall, director, workforce and professional development, at (717) 561-5312. The Donate Life PA website also has additional information about organ donation in Pennsylvania.
