HAP Excellence in Patient Safety Recognition Program

In an effort to support the continued improvement of quality and patient safety among Pennsylvania hospitals, HAP has launched a program to recognize Pennsylvania’s top performing hospitals that have reduced health care-associated infections (HAI).

Utilizing data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN), the program will identify and recognize those member hospitals that perform better than the mean standardized infection ratio (SIR) across Pennsylvania in three key measures: central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI), catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI), and clostridium difficile infections (CDI). The recognition program also will identify best practices that can be shared among all hospitals.

HAP has analyzed the most recent hospital data using 2018 HAP Hospital Improvement Innovation Network (HIIN) participating hospitals as a baseline.

NEW 2018 baseline for the 2019 performance year:

  • CLABSI SIR 0.644
  • CAUTI SIR 0.798
  • CDI SIR 0.704

Recipients of the 2018 Awards will be announced at the Patient Safety, Quality, and Sepsis Symposium on September 23, 2019.

2017 baseline for the 2018 recognition:

  • CLABSI SIR 0.785
  • CAUTI SIR 0.775
  • CDI SIR 0.809

HAP members participating in HAP’s HIIN have already conferred HAP rights to the NHSN data so there is nothing that they need to do to be considered for the recognition. HAP member hospitals that do not participate in HAP’s HIIN can confer HAP rights to their NHSN data by contacting HAP’s Peter Nguyen.
