Program Overview

Neil Campbell will focus on best practices health care providers can implement, specifically, with first contact in the emergency department (ED), and will show how these best practices can improve overall patient wellness. She will discuss the importance of language, how the words chosen can often change the tone of patient interactions for better or worse. Additionally, identifying community resources and partners for these individuals can provide long-term support and, over time, reduces the likelihood of repeat hospital visits. Included in this discussion, Neil will share how the use of peer recovery coaches in hospital EDs and neonatal ICUs in their Georgia community has provided a direct line to substance use disorder support and connections to community-based recovery supports.

Program Objectives

At the conclusion of this session, the participants will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate positive verbal rules that should be used to provide substance abuse support outside the ER
  2. Discuss how to best work with community partners to provide connections between patients and recovery community support services
  3. Identify hospital staff and peer service providers to implement a community-based peer support program within an emergency department setting
  4.  Discuss how to better understand the brain science of addiction as well as the recovery process for individuals with substance use challenges

Neil Campbell, is the executive director of the Georgia Council on Substance Abuse (GCSA), a nonprofit organization dedicated to building and supporting community alliances to increase the impact of recovery in Georgia’s communities through education, advocacy, training, and peer support services. She is also the co-founder of the Certified Addiction Recovery Empowerment Specialist (CARES) Academy. In 2017, under Ms. Campbell’s leadership, GCSA began providing peer recovery support services for individuals experiencing a substance use related incident in Northeast Georgia Hospital System’s three emergency departments in Gainesville, Winder, and Braselton. The program, Northeast Georgia Community Connections, has served more than 1,000 patients to date and has since expanded to the neonatal intensive care units in the Gainesville and Winder campuses.
