Restraint and seclusion is a “hot spot” with both CMS and the Joint Commission, and a common area where hospitals are cited for being out of compliance. The restraint policy is one of the hardest to write and understand in health care today. This session will help simplify the CMS 50-page interpretive guidelines. It will also provide a crosswalk to the Joint Commission standards.

Program Overview

Sue Dill Calloway will discuss the requirements for an internal log and what must be in the log for patients who die in one or two soft wrist restraints, and will include what must be documented in the medical record as well. She will also discuss the reporting requirements for patients who die within 24 hours of being put in restraints.

Program Objectives

At the end of this session, the participants will be able to:

  1. List what a hospital must document in the internal log if a patient dies within 24 hours of being restrained with two soft wrist restraints
  2. Discuss the CMS requirement in which all physicians, and other staff, who order restraints, must be educated on the hospital policy
  3. Describe the CMS restraint education requirements for staff
  4. Discuss the specific items CMS requires be documents in the medical record for the one hour face-to-face evaluation on patients who are violent and or self-destructive

Faculty

Sue Dill Calloway

Sue Dill Calloway has been a nurse attorney and consultant for more than 30 years. Currently, she is president of Patient Safety and Healthcare Education and Consulting and was previously the chief learning officer for the Emergency Medicine Patient Safety Foundation. She has conducted many educational programs for nurses, physicians, and other health care providers. Sue has authored over 100 books and numerous articles. She is a frequent speaker and is well known across the country in the areas of health care law, risk management, and patient safety. Sue has no real or perceived conflicts of interest that relate to this presentation.

 

Who Should Attend

This webinar will be of interest to all nurses and physicians with direct patient care, chief medical officer, chief nursing officer, chief operating officer, nurse educator, risk manager, patient safety officer, PI director, TJC coordinator, quality director, hospital legal counsel, compliance officers, accreditation and regulation staff. Others that should attend include staff who remove and apply them as part of their care such as radiology techs, ultra sound technologists, and transport staff.

Fee includes handout materials forwarded via email prior to the session.

Registration Cancellation Policy

No refunds will be issued for cancellations received after December 6. There is a $25 administrative fee on all cancellations. Cancellations must be received in writing.

The registration deadline is December 5.

Certificate of Attendance

A general certificate of attendance will be emailed to all participants. Some national, state, and local licensing boards and professional organizations will grant continuing education credits for attendance when you submit the course outline (save the brochure) and your certificate of attendance. It is recommended you contact your own board or organization to find out what is required.

How the Webinar Will Work

There is no limit to the number of staff from your office per connection who can tune in to the seminar via speakerphone and computer. Additional connections dialing/logging in will be billed. Enjoy the benefits of attending a live conference without having to leave the office.
